An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

However these probabilities had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Grows

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
